Google Brings Kit Kat to Google Glass – Longer Battery But No Video

Google Glass

Google Glass Explorers are in for a treat. Google has released the latest OS, Android Kit Kat, for Google Glass. This comes at a timely moment as Google is making a limited number of Google Glass devices available to even more wannabe Google Explorers.

The update makes a number of refinements to Google Glass. Most importantly we should see better battery life and a number of runtime enhancements thanks to the switch from Glass’ XE.

The interface also benefits from a number of changes. One simple improvement is the ability to use photo replies in hangout messages. Google identified that taking photos is the most used feature of the eye-wear, and want to make  the process smoother than previous having to start a new conversation.

Google has also implemented being able to sort voice commands. Due to the increasing number of apps available to Explorers it can become an effort to manage. Being able to use the voice commands  based on frequency and how recently they’ve been used makes it easier as the lesser-used commands are placed towards the end of the menu.

It’s not all sunshine and lollipops though. The video calling feature has been dropped so that Google can focus its efforts elsewhere to bring you that better glass experience. Some users might be upset about this but with the upcoming Glass expansion and Livestream, that gap can be filled in elsewhere.

Bringing Android Kit Kat to Google Glass means that Google can focus on unified development between phone and wearables. It will be interesting to see how all of these tech gadgets will work together down the line.
