Canonical Begins Emailing Users – Ubuntu One Is Shutting Down

Ubuntu One

Following on from Ubuntu’s announcement that they will be turning off Ubuntu One and Ubuntu music services, Canonical have begun to email users of the service that it will be shut down on 1 June 2014.

Ubuntu One is a cloud storage service that offered users a free 5GB of storage with the option to purchase more storage. Users have been alerted that they will have an additional two months to download their files. After 31st July the service will be turned off completely.

Ubuntu One has the advantage of working on multiple platforms and devices, but it seems that the increased pricing competitiveness from other cloud storage providers such as Amazon and Dropbox seems to have caused more strain on the service than Canonical can justify.

Anyone using Ubuntu One will need to ensure that their files are safely downloaded to their computers to make sure that no work will be lost.

What service will you switch to to keep your files available online?
