TELUS Partnering With CIBC To Launch Its Mobile Payment Service

Mobile Payment Services seem to be a  hot topic with most North American carriers these last few years. Back in the fall, TELUS released a new NFC-enabled SIM card that they promised would eventually be “used for mobile banking services”, but we’ve yet to see such a service come to fruition after a month has passed in 2014.

Earlier this week, MobileSyrup received an internal doc from Telus stating that TELUS’s “NFC Mobile Payments” option will go live to market on Tuesday, and its banking launch partner will be none other than CIBC. This will likely be a similar offering to Rogers SureTap service, where users have the ability to purchase low-cost items (under $50) with their NFC-enabled smartphone.

The service does come with a few cons that’ll guarantee this service is not available on all TELUS device. First, you’ll need one of the NFC-enabled SIM with voice and data plan. Secondly, from the payment sidee, you’ll need to be a CIBC credit card cardholder and have the CIBC mobile payment app installed. Once you do all this, then you can freely use the service wherever you find a MasterCard PayPass or Visa PayWave point of sale.

Eligible devices at launch include the Samsung Galaxy SIII, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Note II and the HTC One. If CIBC isn’t your preferred banking choice, fear not as the doc states that “TELUS has plans to certify and launch additional devices with multiple banking partners in future phases.”
