Toronto-based Kiwi Wearables is taking a unique approach to wearable devices by launching it’s first consumer product called the Kiwi Move.
The Kiwi Move is an internet-enabled device that can be used to track your daily physical activities, interact with and control internet-connected devices at home, record voice notes and secure your valuables. This device’s approach to wearable technology seems to be in a league of it’s own compared to offerings from Samsung and LG that we’ve seen come to the market in the last few months.
“The Kiwi Move is our vision for the future of wearable tech, as we look to make single-function devices a thing of the past,” said Ali Nawab, Kiwi’s Chief Executive Officer. “We believe that wearable tech products should be multi-functional — One Kiwi Move, Many Apps.”
Right out of the box, the Kiwi Move has a half dozen apps that it can be integrated with, including:
- Kiwi Move: Count steps, stairs climbed and track your activity.
- Kiwi Insights: Gain insights into your lifestyle and behaviour by correlating your motion data with your daily activities.
- Kiwi Gesture: Use motion gestures to speak to the internet or control your home appliances.
- Kiwi Sound: Use the microphone as an input to take voice notes, track your diet and identify your favourite songs.
- Kiwi Lock: Use your Kiwi Move to secure and locate your valuables.
The one app that stands to me is the When. Do app. This app enables you to easily set up and share “When/Do” recipes to seamlessly automate activities in their daily lives. (ex. WHEN I PLAY A GAME, DO USE MY KIWI AS THE CONTROLLER)
According to Kiwi’s Dev section, they are also working on plug-ins to integrate Kiwi Move with Pebble, Google Glass, Philips Hue, Strava and Run Keeper.
Although this device is still in its infancy, I really think it has the potential of ushering a new era in wearable devices unlike what we’ve seen in the past few years.
The Kiwi Move is avaible for pre-order at the discounted price of $99 (value of $150). The Kiwi Move comes with a strap + clip and will be shipped in July 2014. If you’re an app developer, you can still pick up on of their alpha Dev Kit for $80.
